JHWalter designed and obtained planning permission for joint developers Millcroft Developments Ltd (Plots 1-4) and JWT Property Developments Ltd/BMA Ltd (Plots 5-8). The development has won the New Build category of The Harry Johnson Award 2018 for the high quality of the design and contruction of 8 dwellings at East Markham.

The Harry Johnson Award Scheme was introduced in 1987 to commemorate the late Harry Johnson, the founder of the Nottinghamshire Building Preservation Trust.  The awards, which are for heritage and conservation projects throughout Nottinghamshire, covers restoration and new build categories.  JHWalter was encouraged to enter the East Markham development by Bassetlaw’s conservation office, as he said it was ‘absolutely fantastic’, is a “fine example of a traditional Notts village extension” and ‘has a great chance of winning’.

Though it was a new build development, Peter Welch from JHWalter, based the design on an old Victorian farmstead, using threshing barns, cartsheds, stables, dovecotes, farmhouses and cottages from that period as inspiration.  The build quality was exceptional, with good choice of materials and attention to detail.
