Rush to put Properties Up For Sale after Introduction of New Flat Rate CGT

News Image PROPERTY auctioneers are anticipating a busy few months with a rush to put properties and land up for sale as vendors seek to avoid having to pay thousands of pounds in tax. In his pre-budget report the new chancellor Alistair Darling announced plans to introduce a flat rate capital gains tax (CGT) of 18 per cent, replacing the current 'taper relief' which sees the tax rate diminish over time. According to Kate Russell, Chartered Surveyor at Lincolnshire-based JHWalter, the new rate, which will come into force from April 6 next year, will save some people thousands of pounds but cost others thousands more.

Historic City Church To Be Sold

News Image A former church which dates back to the 16th Century and holds a prime position in Lincoln is to be sold off. St Michael on the Mount, in the city's historic Cathedral quarter, was battered in the English Civil War and rebuilt several times since. It has recently been used as an art workshop by the University of Lincoln but is now being auctioned with a guide price of £280,000.
